West Palm Beach city commissioners gave final approval to an 18-story condominium tower along Flagler Drive across the water from Mar-a-Lago, even as they worried whether doing so would open the door to even higher buildings nearby.
The commission voted 5-0 on May 27 to sign off on the Flagler House project at 3705 S. Flagler Drive. The approval came over the objections of residents in the surrounding neighborhoods who said the building’s height would be out of character with the area.
The building would go up along a stretch of condo towers just north of Southern Boulevard, but at 190 feet it would tower over the others. The Portofino condo building just to the south stands at 135 feet, while the Harbor Towers building beyond that stands at 101. The tower would be built on the site of a 60-year-old, three-story condo building. The new building would have 39 units, the same number as the current one.
